HOUSE M.D.

Celebrating its 100th episode milestone on Feb. 2, 2009, FOX's prime-time hit television drama, HOUSE, solves mysteries where the villain is a medical malady and the hero is an irreverent, controversial doctor who trusts no one, least of all his patients. The featured protagonist, Dr. Gregory House, is an accomplished British actor named Hugh Laurie.

"DR. GREGORY HOUSE (Hugh Laurie), devoid of bedside manner and dealing with his own constant physical pain, uses a cane that seems to punctuate his acerbic, brutally honest demeanor. His behavior often borders on antisocial, but House is a brilliant diagnostician whose unconventional thinking and flawless instincts afford him a great deal of respect. An infectious disease specialist, he thrives on the challenge of solving medical puzzles in order to save lives." (Fox.com)

I can't say that I've ever seen a full episode of HOUSE, but I understand that he is considered by many to be a very attractive man. The same wit and sarcastic cynicism that endears his to so many, disinterests me from following his show. The same goes for SCRUBS.

Interesting Facts

  • Laurie co-wrote three seasons of BBC's "Blackadder" starring renowned actor Rowan Atkinson (a.k.a. Mr. Bean).
  • HOUSE is produced by Brian Singer, who also directed and produced such films as Valkrie (2008), Superman Returns (2006) Xmen 2 (2003), The Usual Suspects (1995) and future film Superman: Man of Steel (2010)
  • When Bryan Singer cast Laurie as Gregory House on "House M.D." (2004), he was unaware that Laurie is British.
  • Laurie also made appearances in the movies, Spice World (Poirot), Stuart Little I, II, III (Stewart's Father), Man in the Iron Mask (King's Adviser), 101 Dalmatians (Jasper, 1996 version) and the TV show Family Guy (Man at Bar)
  • If you can recall, Laurie also acted across from Dennis Quaid in Flight of the Phoenix (2004).
  • Auditioned for the part of Rimmer in BBC's "Red Dwarf" (1988).
  • 1977: Won the National Junior Championship for rowing (coxed pair). In the same year, he and his rowing partner represented England in the World Junior Championship for rowing where they finished fourth place.
  • During their time at Cambridge Footlights, he and Emma Thompson dated for some time.
  • Laurie's son Bill auditioned for a role in a Harry Potter film but was told he was too young.
  • The character of HOUSE parallels that of Sir Sherlock Holmes:
    • They both live at address: 221B.
    • They both drug addicts (House to Vicodin and Holmes to cocaine).
    • They both play and instrument (Holmes plays the violin, House the piano and guitar).
    • House's relationship with Dr. James Wilson parallels that of Holmes and Dr. John Watson.
    • They are both primarily aloof, friendless characters.
    • They don't accept cases unless they "interest them".
    • They both rely on psychology to solve their cases.
    • Many, many more similarities.

  3. When I see him, all I can think about is Jasper from 101 Dalmations. :) The bumbling fool not the medical doctor.

"You just won gold, silver and bronze in the IDIOT olympics!"

    "....who won the gold?"

I saw part of house once. Ehhh.

Rummi-"CUB" vs. Rummi-"CUBE"

The "Rummikub" Pronunciation Debate Affirmative Constructive: "Cub" For years, I have been a firm advocate and defender of the pronunciation, Rummi-"CUB".  The game box I grew up with spelled it, Rummicub  on the box. However, other productions of the game have variant spellings: Rummykub , Rummy Kube , Rummy Tiles , etc.  Based solely on box spelling, the game's true pronunciation is open to interpretation. Therefore, Rummi"cub" is equally acceptable to any other given pronunciation. Negative  Constructive : "Cube" My opponents argue that since the game originated over seas, we ought to respect and maintain its original pronunciation. Affirmative Rebuttal: Americanization of the Term When the game was brought to America and given Americanized rules, its name was also Americanized. Pronunciation loyalists then counter my rebuttal with, "there are lots of adopted foreign words that have retained their original pron...

The Secret Reason Why "Good Witch" Feels Emotionally Off

TL;DR It's the Botox. For the past 3 months, my wife, Stacia, and I have been watching  Good Witch  (via Netflix and Amazon Prime). Stacia adores winding down to "Hallmark-y shows." We can rely on Good Witch episodes to always resolve happily. The episodes are never too intense. The height of conflict revolves around things like someone's inability to locate the perfect spot to snap a romantic photo for a new tourism brochure. I consider my time watching these shows spouse bonding time , and emotional training. My favorite thing about watching feel-good shows with Stacia is getting to observe her facial reactions to the on-screen drama. When two people lean in for a long-anticipated kiss, Stacia tucks her knees into her chest and frowns with her forehead while lifting her chin and bottom lip. While I'm typically unable to suspend my disbelief, Stacia seems completely entranced by the various characters' emotions. Wishing I could join her in being swept aw...

Who's Got The Funk?

I am an amateur guitarist, and I've got no funk. My musical skills seem to lacking that special something . Great musicians have it . Those fortunate enough to have gotten hold of  it , create timeless hits. While musicians without it  fade into oblivion. After spending hours searching through Blues history websites and 1970's band documentaries online, I discovered what that special something  is thank to a (70% Man, 30% fish) character from the BBC show "The Mighty Boosh" named Old Gregg. He identified that  thing  as  The Funk ! But what exactly is The Funk ? Here is some dialogue from the show to help explain its origin and purpose: Old Gregg: You're a musician, yeah? Howard: Yes I am. Old Gregg: Butchya ain't very good, are ya? Howard: I'm one of the best in town. Old Gregg: Come on, I read your reviews. Hmm? You know what your problem is? Howard: What? Old Gregg: Ya ain't got the funk. You're all rigid. Hmm? You're l...
