How to Beat the Winter Blues

Pexels Brigham Young University (BYU) students, like students anywhere else, are susceptible to the winter blues. Here are some common ways students might cope with the winter season: Outdoor Activities : Taking advantage of  winter intramural sports and activities  can be a great way to stay active and enjoy the season. Additionally, students might prefer going out on their own by taking advantage of local, world-class skiing or snowboarding resorts Alta or Snowbird , or simply taking a walk in the snow. Don't like the cold? Soak in the sunshine by heading to St. George for a day. Indoor Recreation : Keep up with exercise routines and plan weekly activities to break the winter routine. BYU and Provo offer indoor recreational facilities where students can engage in activities like pickleball, or  swimming at the Richards Building (RB), rock climbing at the Quarry, or playing indoor activities with friends during open court times at the RB gyms. Whatever indoor activit...

Volleyball: Beyond the Fundamentals

USA Volleyball created some illustrations to help new players understand volleyball fundamentals: Underhand Serve Dig Pass Overhand Serve Set Jump Set Joust/Block Spike I downloaded and shared these diagrams here because I think they are too great to risk disappearing on their original webpage.   USA Volleyball also has this 24-page PDF  explaining strategy, rules, and other essential elements of the game.  However, you're probably looking at this webpage because you're hoping to move your team beyond that point. How to move beyond the fundies: "The reason many teams stop progressing is because they keep working on the same things over and over.  You see, you can work hard, but if you aren't continuously augmenting and improving your skill set, you'll never get ahead of your competitors." —Coach Kevin Coach Kevin  developed the following 23-page drill set (PDF ) in order to give your team the varied skill set and c...

How to Become a Volleyball Expert

The Secret to Success is a Proactive Defense When you're playing defense, many players think that how they handle the hard drives and how they pass are the most important things. Yes, those are critical skills, but more important is to  make sure you are in the right place at the right time.  A  lot of players are so concerned with their form, they end up just standing there with "stone feet" and not moving anywhere.   You don't need to worry about passing the ball if you are not getting there in the first place! Follow these tips to make sure you are playing defense at the highest level possible.  1. Get in proper defensive stance -  You will find it hard to move to the right place if you are standing incorrectly. You should have your knees bent, on your toes, keeping your arms relaxed and in front of you. There is nothing that drives a coach more crazy than to see a player playing defense standing straight up with their knees locked. The bottom lin...

How To Pronounce "Via"?

According to Oxford Dictionary, it is correctly pronounced both ways: via |ˈvÄ«É™; ˈvÄ“É™| preposition traveling through (a place) en route to a destination : they came to Europe via Turkey. • by way of; through : they can see the artists' works via a camera hookup. • by means of : a file sent via electronic mail. ORIGIN late 18th cent.: from Latin, ablative of via ‘way, road.’ From what I've gathered from web forums, those who speak International English say, "vIa" while American English speakers typically say, "vEa." How you pronounce it (and under what circumstances)? Image source

How To Avoiding Camera Loss

Have you lost your camera recently?  Are you planning a big trip? Anyone can be a victim of discouragement and despair of camera loss. "How can I prevent camera loss?"  I hear you. Unfortunately, you can't.  But you can do something to encourage its safe return.  All you have to do is take some photos which you never delete from your camera so when someone finds your camera at the bottom of the gorilla pit they are able to locate you and return the lost property to its rightful owner. How To Fix a Leaky Refrigerator

For the past two weeks, my refrigerator leaked water on our kitchen hardwood floor. Here's what you need to do to fix it. First thing you need to check is the veggie drawers to see if there is any water collected in there If that is clean, you may not be aware that many models of refrigerators have plastic pans underneath them to catch the water that defrosts from the freezer. Usually this water sits in the catcher until evaporates. Unfortunately, ours was cracked causing the water leak. There might be one more possibility, like there is a natural underwater spring beneath your frig, but I haven't looked into since my problem was resolved with the previous solution. Good luck.

How To Unroll Aluminium Foil

Do you struggle when tearing aluminum foil? Do you have difficulty keeping the roll inside the cardboard container while you are tugging at it? Well, I have good news and BETTER news! Good news: You are not ALONE! The entire population of aluminum foil users struggle with the same problem. (Doesn't that make you feel better!) BETTER NEWS: Every container of aluminum foil or cellophane that I've seen has finger-holes on either side of the box that say, "PUSH IN TO LOCK HERE." Once those tabs are pushed in, they hold the roll in place inside the container while they pull a desired length of product with the other hand. You never have to worry about the roll escaping from you and unraveling across the kitchen floor! However, One day, when I have enough money that I don't feel the need to sell plasma at the local center, I am going to spring for the plush "Sheets" of aluminum foil. That way, I will never have to worry about those pesky r...

Werewolves: Variation on Mafia, the Group Game

I was first introduced to Mafia in 1995 at a Family Home Evening activity. With only 6-players in our family, we selected one Narrator, two Mafia gangsters (murder one person/night), one Detective (ask the narrator about the identity of one person/round), and sometimes we played with a Guardian Angel (who can save one person/round); everyone else were innocent citizens. THE WEREWOLVES OF MILLERS HOLLOW Review and Detailed Explanation Werewolves is essentially the same game. I played it on Monday night for an FHE activity as well. We played 2 games with 10 and 11 players respectively. Each game lasted about 10-20 minutes. IT WAS SOOO MUCH FUN! I can totally see my immediate family enjoying some of the new rules associated with Werewolves . Here is a list of differences between my family's version of Mafia and the way we played it last night. Three main differences 1. New Characters 2. Voting is performed by pointing. (Much more efficient.) 3. The game is pla...

Mafia: The Expansion Set of Characters

History of Mafia The first thing you must know is that Hitler was not Mafioso, and he did not invent the game of Mafia (although he was apparently a Lady Killer). Russian University Professor, Dimitry Davidoff invented Mafia , as we know it, in 1986. Davidoff had a web page upon which he described the origin of the game. Unfortunately, his site is no longer available. [ Crowd moans .] However, I found a mirror of his original site on archive.org . [ Crowd cheers .] Davidoff believes this game to have originated in England in the 1970's. It quite probably goes back much further, though. Davidoff also recalls a Russian game called Ubiitca, which he translates as "Muderer." In Ubiitca, there is not night, and the lone murderer kills by "winking" at his victim during the day. The victim, seeing the wink, must say "ouch" and die. The game is constantly evolving. Since its modern re-conception in 1986, Davidoff's rules have been greatly "...

How To Break Into (Almost) Any Lock

Very easy. And no, you Sickos, I'm not referring to my Carnal Treasure . (Though, I am impressed if you picked up on that movie reference. Also see: Moroni 9:9 ) I'm talking about the super-secret thingy I keep locked inside my apartment, locked inside my room and locked inside my gym bag with a combination lock! That's right! I'm talking about my Speedo. Only 20 minutes on the internet will teach you all you have to know to negotiate the most menacing of burglary obstacles. Tumbler Locks How to pick a 5-pin lock (standard on front doors): Pop Locks Once inside the house, here's an explanation on how to pop the locks on those simple bedroom and bathroom doors: Combination Lock Once you're inside the room, what you are search for will probably be locked away somewhere safe. They're not super rich so instead of a safe it's just locked away with a combination lock. Fortunately, you came prepared with a " shim ": C...
