Dream Journal: Money Isn't Everything (October 4, 2008)

DREAM 1. I invented a modified paperclip to hold one's place on a clipboard. It sold millions and I will never have to work again. 2. To celebrate, I vacationed on an exclusive island near Puerto Rico. I didn't know however that this island featured a hotel with special "entertainment". The hotel was connected to two giant cages. One resembled a golf driving range and the other looked like a frisbee golf/obstacle course. When evening fell, I found out that these cages were filled with convicts who fight each other to the death for a chance at freedom. By winning enough points, they can earn their freedom and leave the island. To throw a twist in it, normal vacationers can sign their lives away and join the convicts in the cages for a chance to earn 5 million dollars... Yes, I played. I'm not sure if I was a still a vacationer or became a convict or just watched a convict play from a third person view. All I remember is that SOMEONE was really good...

I Am Officially an EMT-B, Utah Certified!

It's finally official. I received my certification card, badge and sticker in the mail this week. My favorite part of EMT-B training was practicing medical and trauma assessments out by the pool at Carriage Cove. I actually made a lot of friends that I wouldn't have made without the excused to examine them. (There is a bonding effect when one person touches another person with a stethoscope.)

Rock the Block!

What a night! Loud music, unscrupulous dancing and no food. Believe it or not, this was a fund-raiser for disabled folks without wheelchairs. Stef told me about this little block party; she helped set up/take pictures. My real purpose for going was to reclaim my wallet from a Julie. I left my wallet and phone in her purse when we climbed down the river bank to play in the water. Jojo was bored at home so I invited her to go with me on this reclamation mission. Had I known she was so opposed to dancing, I probably would have left her with Chen to play ping-pong. We did, however, end up having quite an adventure that I was very proud of her for going on with me. On our search for Stefanie, we walked around the perimeter of the dancing area. Along the way, we ran into my old roommates Brian and Ben. They were at one of the entrances collecting donations for the cause. I asked if I could help. (I felt pretty confident in my soliciting skills after handing out thousands of ...

Are you feeling it today? MASTER THE "POWER NAP"!

This article from the Boston Globe has helped me understand better how I can nap best. I love the idea that napping is no longer a common sign of laziness but is now being widely accepted as a method to become smarter, healthier and safer. ---------------- Listening to: Static - Turn On Switch Off (Starring Valerie Trebeljahr)

Google: The $157 Billion Typo

A Student at Stanford University, Sean Anderson accidentally helped Larry Page come up with the name and spelling of Google. While Page and Anderson were in Page’s office, the two were attempting to come up for a name for the would-be search behemoth. Sean had suggested verbally the word “googolplex”, spurning Page to shorten it to “googol”. Anderson then went to check the availability of the word, accidentally spelling it “Google” in an internet domain name registry. Available it was, and the company has decided to go with this spelling ever since. Whether or not the company has succeeded because of the name is subject to some speculation, it is very interesting to see what has become of a basic spelling error. It also goes to show that not all typos result in lives being ruined and/or financial turmoil, way to go Sean Anderson (although he now works for Microsoft). Did I mention, I was pulled over last week?

On our way home from Dancing in Murray, I made a safe illegal turn. While traveling South along State Street, I discovered that I needed to make a right to find the freeway. Unfortunately, I was one lane away from the "protected-right-turn-lane". I signaled and checked all my mirrors carefully. No on-coming traffic so I made the turn. What I didn't notice was that the jeep blaring its headlights through my back window was actually a City of Murray, K-9 Police Unit. Lickety-split, his police lights turned on and I pulled over into the hospital entrance lane. (One thing I learned from being pulled over in someone else's car is that police typically don't care where you pull over. They are accustomed to parking where ever they want, so if you prolong pulling over, it just annoys them and they sometimes suspect you are trying to evade them and call for backup.) Anyway, when we were fully stopped it took the officer less than 10 seconds to get out of his car---t...

Ballroom Dancing Night

Saturday, the 28th, I organized a "ward" ballroom dancing trip up to the Murray Art Center . In anticipation of many who were not familiar with ballroom, I set up a Wednesday night practice/instruction. We met on our communal patio at 9pm under some flood lights. The conditions were perfect. We had two BYU Ballroom Tour Team members teach the Hustle and the Waltz. It was an amazing success for all 7 of the brave ward members who came out. Saturday night, we only had 5 ward members show. Still we had a great time. Fortunately, Christoffer, who teaches dance at BYU invited his whole class and some of his other experienced dancing friends so we ended up with about 20 of us. It was the smallest group I've ever gone with but it was nice to get to know EVERYONE who came. Stefanie and Phung (from Vietnam and a new member of the church) rode with me. Phung was so nice to pay me $5 in quarters to help out with gas. I told him that he didn't have to since gas had become ...
