I Slept Through My First Grad Class This Morning

The first thing I did when I opened my eyes was jump out of bed and write my professor this email:
Joanne, I just woke up and the first thing I'm doing is writing you to tell you how sorry I am for just missing your class today. I know I should be fired for my absence, but I hope there is some way I can make it up. Either by sitting down with Pope or Gentry to look over my PBS [attached to this email] or have them expound on the readings [my notes are also attached] or fill me on on class discussion notes. I am willing to make whatever sacrifice is required to catch up.

I completely planned on waking up with plenty of time to prepare for class. I went to bed relatively early. I set my alarm. I seriously don't know yet what happened.
My excuse is terrible, yet creative. I slept in due to an intense dream I was having. All I can remember is that I dreamed that I was a first time father and I was taking care of my two, small kids and couldn't leave them. When I would try to wake up, they would start crying...

I'll be right up asap,
Bryan

In order to make the bus on time, I had to run. I ran so fast for the bus stop, I ran right out of my sandals. To save time, I ended up taking my flip-flops off and leaping barefoot across the filthy asphalt to barely catch the bus as it was leaving.

When I arrived at class, every one was gone except for the professor and a few other lingerers. I expressed my apologies and asked if there was anything immediately that I could do to make up the missed 3-hour class. "No. Just ask one of your cohorts about some of the discussion we had," came her reply. As she turned away, I thought she muttered, "and take good care of those kids."

p.s. Turns out, the alarm was set for PM, not AM.
p.p.s. I think I dreamed about parenthood because my sister called me the previous night to tell me she was engaged.

  1. which exactly why playing Counter Strike all night and into the early morning could have saved you from this experience. Thanks for the tip about second skin, what an eye opening piece of work.

  2. Whew, that must have been quite the "wake up call." I love that you ran barefoot to the bus across the filthy asphalt. I'm glad to see you made an effort to make it there even though it was over by the time you got there. I also think maybe your subconscious was referring to Phil's and my condition and not so much Stef and Scott's (at least let's hope not yet....)

  3. That am/pm thing has burned me one time too many...I now assume I've got it wrong and check every time specifically for that! And I am proud of you for not creeping into the Counter Strike world and greatly diminishing your academic effectiveness!

Rummi-"CUB" vs. Rummi-"CUBE"

The "Rummikub" Pronunciation Debate Affirmative Constructive: "Cub" For years, I have been a firm advocate and defender of the pronunciation, Rummi-"CUB".  The game box I grew up with spelled it, Rummicub  on the box. However, other productions of the game have variant spellings: Rummykub , Rummy Kube , Rummy Tiles , etc.  Based solely on box spelling, the game's true pronunciation is open to interpretation. Therefore, Rummi"cub" is equally acceptable to any other given pronunciation. Negative  Constructive : "Cube" My opponents argue that since the game originated over seas, we ought to respect and maintain its original pronunciation. Affirmative Rebuttal: Americanization of the Term When the game was brought to America and given Americanized rules, its name was also Americanized. Pronunciation loyalists then counter my rebuttal with, "there are lots of adopted foreign words that have retained their original pron...

Werewolves: Variation on Mafia, the Group Game

I was first introduced to Mafia in 1995 at a Family Home Evening activity. With only 6-players in our family, we selected one Narrator, two Mafia gangsters (murder one person/night), one Detective (ask the narrator about the identity of one person/round), and sometimes we played with a Guardian Angel (who can save one person/round); everyone else were innocent citizens. THE WEREWOLVES OF MILLERS HOLLOW Review and Detailed Explanation Werewolves is essentially the same game. I played it on Monday night for an FHE activity as well. We played 2 games with 10 and 11 players respectively. Each game lasted about 10-20 minutes. IT WAS SOOO MUCH FUN! I can totally see my immediate family enjoying some of the new rules associated with Werewolves . Here is a list of differences between my family's version of Mafia and the way we played it last night. Three main differences 1. New Characters 2. Voting is performed by pointing. (Much more efficient.) 3. The game is pla...

Who's Got The Funk?

I am an amateur guitarist. I've got no funk. And I’m pretty crossed up about it. In my personal quest to discover the funk I came across this bit featuring Old Gregg from The Mighty Boosh. Old Gregg observed that some groups have it for a time, and when they do, they produce timeless hits. He identified that special  something as  The Funk ! But what exactly is The Funk ? Here is some dialogue from the show to help explain its origin and purpose: Disclaimer: This is weird. Old Gregg: You're a musician, yeah? Howard: Yes I am. Old Gregg: Butchya ain't very good, are ya? Howard: I'm one of the best in town. Old Gregg: Come on, I read your reviews. Hmm? You know what your problem is? Howard: What? Old Gregg: Ya ain't got the funk. You're all rigid. Hmm? You're like a breadstick. You got no rhythm. Howard: Yeah, well I've heard all this sort of stuff before thank you. Old Gregg: Well maybe I could help you. I got the funk. Howard: Yea...
