Who Will Be the 2009 American Idol: Adam or Chris?

This is a quiz designed to test your ability to judge who you think people are rooting for just by looking at them. Adam, the emo-style dresser with the gorgeous falsetto or Chris, the doll-faced singer with the smooth, light melodies?

1. In this first one you have to guess within the first 15 seconds. The others don't reveal their true colors until the moment the name is announced.

If you got 2/3, you won! If you got less than that, you need to work on your demographic perception skills.

Analysis

You would not believe how difficult it was for me to find a video of people cheering for Chris. I still have no idea how he won. Some Christian Coalition must have been backing him and he managed to get 50,000,001 votes out of the 100,000,000. Seriously, they need to hire multiple independent agencies to count and verify those votes. Whose to say, Simon doesn't secretly pick the winner from the start?

This is my first season watching 'Idol'. Before, I wasn't able to justify 2-3 hours of televion a week for just one show. If I watch TV, I watch it in fast-forward, "Bryan-style", and can pack in 3 shows per hour.

This season, I only watched the last three episode:

3. Adam, Chris and Danny
2. Adam and Chris
1. Final show

But I'll tell you what. I was surprised to find that I loved watching it for two reasons - one, conventional and one, less conventional.

a. I feel inspired to sing and play guitar after watching; two things that I love to do. Watching the really good artists put their souls into their music inspires me to do the same for me and mine.

b. I love to study the psychology behind what the judges say. Each week, I'm sure Simon lectures his fellow adjudicators on what type of feedback he wants each of to give and in what attitude in order to solicit the maximum response from the American audience. I like to predict what each of the four is going to say and how they will say it. Simon is a freaking GENIUS when it comes to manipulating an audience. He knows precisely what to do in every scenario; he's a heartless, psychotic genius. Brilliant!

My Opinion on who should have won?

Danny Gokey, the soul singer whose wife past away, should have won. He was the second runner-up. It should have been Chris to have been kicked off in that episode instead of Danny; Chris did not perform well, but his boyish charm and passion carried him through. In the final showdown between Adam and Chris, it seemed evident to America, and the judges as well, that Adam would be the clear winner. And then, the unthinkable happen...In the end, even Chris was tempted to hand over his trophy.

Comments

  1. The thing is, even when you talk to Chris fans, they openly admit that Adam is a better singer. They just like Chris better. He's closer to their idea of cute, and because there was such a clear difference in ability, he was the underdog. And there's nothing America loves more than an adorable but talented underdog. I thought Adam should have won, hands down.

Rummi-"CUB" vs. Rummi-"CUBE"

The "Rummikub" Pronunciation Debate Affirmative Constructive: "Cub" For years, I have been a firm advocate and defender of the pronunciation, Rummi-"CUB".  The game box I grew up with spelled it, Rummicub  on the box. However, other productions of the game have variant spellings: Rummykub , Rummy Kube , Rummy Tiles , etc.  Based solely on box spelling, the game's true pronunciation is open to interpretation. Therefore, Rummi"cub" is equally acceptable to any other given pronunciation. Negative  Constructive : "Cube" My opponents argue that since the game originated over seas, we ought to respect and maintain its original pronunciation. Affirmative Rebuttal: Americanization of the Term When the game was brought to America and given Americanized rules, its name was also Americanized. Pronunciation loyalists then counter my rebuttal with, "there are lots of adopted foreign words that have retained their original pron...

The Secret Reason Why "Good Witch" Feels Emotionally Off

TL;DR It's the Botox. For the past 3 months, my wife, Stacia, and I have been watching  Good Witch  (via Netflix and Amazon Prime). Stacia adores winding down to "Hallmark-y shows." We can rely on Good Witch episodes to always resolve happily. The episodes are never too intense. The height of conflict revolves around things like someone's inability to locate the perfect spot to snap a romantic photo for a new tourism brochure. I consider my time watching these shows spouse bonding time , and emotional training. My favorite thing about watching feel-good shows with Stacia is getting to observe her facial reactions to the on-screen drama. When two people lean in for a long-anticipated kiss, Stacia tucks her knees into her chest and frowns with her forehead while lifting her chin and bottom lip. While I'm typically unable to suspend my disbelief, Stacia seems completely entranced by the various characters' emotions. Wishing I could join her in being swept aw...

Who's Got The Funk?

I am an amateur guitarist, and I've got no funk. My musical skills seem to lacking that special something . Great musicians have it . Those fortunate enough to have gotten hold of  it , create timeless hits. While musicians without it  fade into oblivion. After spending hours searching through Blues history websites and 1970's band documentaries online, I discovered what that special something  is thank to a (70% Man, 30% fish) character from the BBC show "The Mighty Boosh" named Old Gregg. He identified that  thing  as  The Funk ! But what exactly is The Funk ? Here is some dialogue from the show to help explain its origin and purpose: Old Gregg: You're a musician, yeah? Howard: Yes I am. Old Gregg: Butchya ain't very good, are ya? Howard: I'm one of the best in town. Old Gregg: Come on, I read your reviews. Hmm? You know what your problem is? Howard: What? Old Gregg: Ya ain't got the funk. You're all rigid. Hmm? You're l...
