This past weekend was spectacular. After enjoying The BYU National Dance Sport Championships on Friday night with my good friend Wussle, the following night, I had the honor of supporting my cousin Rebecca Marie Tanner by cheering her on at the 2009 Miss Spanish Fork Scholarship Pageant––the very first pageant I've ever attended.
She was wonderful! Rebecca stayed cool and confident even under the bright and distracting lights flashing all over the stage.
It took incredible courage for her to appear in front of the entire community modeling a swimsuit. What was the purpose of that again? To see if you can maintain a smile whilst enduring the most embarrassing 45 seconds of your life? I can't imagine! That must have felt like an eternity.
Rebecca also demonstrated tremendous poise and concentration when the stage lights essentially went out during the middle of her talent showcase. As her fingers were flying up and down the keys of a grand piano, the stage all of a sudden went dark and it took the dim-witted spotlight operator forever to get a spotlight on her. Still, she finished the piece as if nothing were wrong; I'm sure she could have played the entire piece blindfolded. Chopin would have been proud.
In addition to receiving an secondary award, Rebecca was awarded the prestigious title of First Attendant to the Queen [aka Runner-up]. In my humble opinion, that was the best of all possible outcomes! She will receive $2000 in scholarship money AND she doesn't have to tour [pronounced: TORE] around UTAH, signing autographs, speaking at fairs or riding on floats. NICE!
Even as a foreigner to the Beauty Pageant world, I could sense that the politics surrounding the event were very involved. Honestly, I'm glad the girl who won, did. It seemed like her self-image hinged upon this title. She will go on to compete for the title of Miss Utah (and lose) and have quite the tale to relive through the lives of her daughters and granddaughters. Meanwhile Rebecca will take her scholarship money and return to Utah State where she will finish her undergrad degree by 2011.
Rebecca, you were wonderful! Sorry I didn't bring you flowers. I'll be sure to remember them next time, when you compete for Miss Utah State :) JK.
