Last night, while I was swimming at 24 Hour Fitness, a basketball player laid down on the gym floor and stopped breathing. No pulse either. His heart allegedly STOPPED!
Underwater, I didn't hear the announcement over the intercom requesting anyone with CPR training to report to the gymnasium. I didn't see what was going on until my eye was caught by the flashing ambulance lights in the outside parking lot. It turns out that the guy in the hot tub heard the call to serve and ran to apply his lifeguard training.
I was relieved to hear later from the lifeguard that "it all comes back to you when you are under pressure."
What made the story more interesting, was that on the way out of the gym I was told a different first-hand account of the incident from one of the gym's employees. She claimed to have been the one to have performed CPR on the victim. Her story was much more convincing. She actually described the ball players who stood helplessly by, bouncing their balls incessantly throughout the whole process. She skillfully asked for a t-shirt. 30-long seconds later, one of the Ballers hurled his sweatshirt toward her. She then stretched the fabric over his mouth and used it as a NBM (Non-rebreather-mask). She continued CPR until the paramedics arrived.
I find it interesting that it is the nature of many to exaggerate their roles in important scenarios. Who was the hero and who was the liar? Maybe they were both a little bit of both. The good new is, the breathless baller pulled through in the end. (Did I mention that it took the paramedics an additional 6 minute, a shot of epinephrine, and an AED to bring him back? And all while I was underwater...) It makes me wonder if I'm truly ready to apply my EMT training. Let me think, was it 20 compression to 2 breaths when you have two people, one for rescue breathing and the other for blood circulation? I'd better review my visual aids.

Wow! Someone's heart really stopped? Scary! I'm glad I now know how to do CPR on a lizard.
ReplyDeleteGood visuals. Would you have used an NBM or just gone right for mouth to mouth?
ReplyDeleteI like the wrestling move the most...i don't think i'll ever try resuscitating a lizard though.
