So I took the advice of many of you and started to investigate a career as a firefighter. I researched all the options on the web and determined that the UVSC Recruit Candidate Academy in Provo was the best one for me.
I spoke with a counselor on site who walked me around and introduced me to some cadets and instructors. Everything looked good. One surprise was the "para-military" attitude that everyone exhibited to me. They explained that in the cadet academy, it was like boot camp where you get demerits for things like scoring poorly on a test or looking an instructor in the eye or not saying "sir" or "mam" or standing when anyone of rank enters the room. --Sounds fun to me.
I've got all the paper work in front of me. If I were to pursue this, I would have to do the following:
-Apply online to UVSC under "Fire Sciences" for $35
-Meet with a Fire Counselor and sign up for some required courses, like anatomy, and apply for the Recruit Candidate Academy (RCA) for next Fall (August).
-Take the EMT course from 5/5-7/5 for $650
-Take the physical exam in July
-Start RCA
-Volunteer internship at a local fire station
-After a year of EMT, I can train to be a paramedic
-I can concurrently apply to be hired on to a station as a Brigadier.
-Salary is $32,000
-Work 10 days a month; on 2, off 4
-Retire after 20 years at 1/2 current salary/year.
-Most all firemen hold down 2 jobs so they don't drive their wives crazy.
Now I just have to decide to get started.
Your thoughts?

Only 10 days a month, huh? Would you be interested in being a paramedic full time? Or part, if you really liked the firefighting part. I think you should go after something, whether it be this or not, and see how the cards unfold.
ReplyDeleteWe'll be praying for you.
I had such a difficult time getting into your comment box that I had just about given up, and then it popped up. My thought is just get into something that will give you medical and a little security. You can always change, but this is the NOW. You have so much on the ball that I know whatever you decide to do, you will be very successful.
ReplyDeleteDad and I just had dinner with the Soptichs in our stake; he has been a fireman for 30 years; Fire Chief and Fire Marshall. He said after 3years, his regular department men are earning $72,000 a year. Also you do not need to do the $650 course before- they will give that to you if you are selected. The only negative I recall is that he said dep on where you are, you may train and drill for a year and not see one real fire; you do a lot of medic stuff and assemblies, scouts, etc. And you do need another flexible job. The volunteer stuff is key. Before I signed up for anything I would visit, interview guys, shadow and decide if you want to jump in head first! Main thing is, where do you want to settle to live??
