OMGosh! He is SUCH a PLAYER!

This is the Saddest Thing I Heard All Week "I have to be super careful about who I ask out on dates now because I'm getting a reputation as a player  in my ward ." — A male friend and alleged   player I was  furious  when I heard this. So now I'm taking it out on my keyboard! YSAs don't know what they're talking about. Dating culture is obviously broken, and I hope that sharing my thoughts here might do something to help fix it! If you are one of the five people that reads this, God bless you. My friend is one of the coolest guys I know. To protect his identify, we'll call him Eddie.  Eddie is a hardworking, funny, athletic, 27-year-old professional living in Provo, Utah—a catch by any standard.  Unfortunately, Eddie has been branded a player  by both men and women in his YSA ward. He feels he has earned their condemnation due to the fact that he had exclusively dated three girls and casually dated a dozen more in his ward over the p...

TV Review: Thematic Analysis of Doctor Who, S08E01 — "Deep Breath"

Warning: Only read this post if you are a DW nerd and/or enjoy thematic analysis   The Writing is Objectively *Good* Feelings for the BBC sensation,  Doctor Who , are pretty segregated. For most viewers, they seem to either love the show or think it's cheesy. No one can really HATE the show—at worst, viewers might criticize the British comedy for being low-budget and childish. But regardless of your feelings towards the show's execution, the writing is inarguably BRILLIANT! Let me introduce the two head writers since 2005: Russell T. Davies  (Headwriter & showrunner:  2005 - 2010) Steven Moffat  (Headwriter & showrunner:  2010 - CURRENT) including classic episodes like Blink , Silence in the Library , and Let's Kill Hilter  during his predecessor's tenure.  Moffat is also the headwriter for the BBC success, Sherlock (starring  Benedict Cumberbatch  & Martin Freeman ) These men are two of tel...

Does Daily Scripture Study Really Make a Difference?

Sister Ann Madsen Sister Madsen is a master teacher . She has internalized the pattern of learning in the gospel. Consequentially, she knows how to teach it so that people will truly grow—that is, by inviting learners to faithfully engage with her and the Spirit when she is in front of a crowd. The YSA stake fireside I attended this evening was no exception. We spent the few minutes of our time together getting to know one another.  She was extremely genuine, which helped us develop an immediate trust in her and what she was about to say.  Madsen then shared a few, simple, powerful statements of truth, which set the tone and scope for the rest of the evening. About 15 minutes into it, she began to ask the audience questions and pass around microphones allowing us to verbally share our testimonies with one another. She even gave out her telephone number and invited us to text her our thoughts. And so, although I didn't speak up during the meeting, I wanted to share my ...

Film Review: TRANSFORMERS 4: AGE OF EXTINCTION

Dear: fellow Michael Bay haters, and people who are STILL unable to cope with a re-imagined 80's Transformers cartoon franchise, and those who were abruptly disenchanted with Transformers after the first film came out back in 2007, Transformers: Age of Extinction  is critic proof.  In terms Film Crit Hulk would understand, this franchise can't be smashed.  Bay knows it.  Hollywood knows it.  And the $104 million in opening weekend box office sales knows it.   The only reason anyone went to this T4 was to see the 10-second clip of Optimus Prime riding a T-rex.  Film critics (who are concerned with story and meaning) will futilely bang their heads against a wall in their efforts to attack this film. " Trans-four-mores" was never intended to be a Nolan-esqe, deep-themed, psychological drama—it's your standard "we pay you money, you show us explosions" blockbuster transaction. Bay figured out this simple equation long ago: A successful Hollywood...
