Bryan's 2011 Movie Expectations

Movies I'm excited to see:
  • Win Win -  Paul Giamatti is brilliant.  Excellent story! I can't wait. (Not in theater)
  • Hanna - This trailer reminds me of Mission Impossible, mixed with my grandpa's favorite novel,  Louis Lamour's Last of the Breed. Cate Blanchett looks cold and incredible.
  • The Time that Remains - Life is Beautiful meets Waking Ned Divine. How can you not be excited to watch this film? (Not in theater)
  • Cowboys and Aliens - If they do this film right, it will be the first of a new genre. Historic. (In theater)
  • Cars 2 - I desperately hope this isn't going to just be "The Slapstick Mater Show." (In theater)
  • The Illusionist - A Eastern European, animated film.  They bring their culture into its style. (On video)
  • Today's Special - I love Indian food and films about food. This is my food film for the year. (Not in theater)
  • Freakonomics - Research-based, psychological documentary. Love these films. (Not in theater)
Question marks (with potential to surprise):
  • HappyThankYouMorePlease - Great message. (Not in theater)
  • The King's Speech - Oscar-nominated film. True story. Excellent acting, cinematography, story. Not a life-changer. (Not in theater)
  • Gnomeo and Juliet - I will be highly amused if they use plenty of allusions to the stage play.
  • Harry Potter 7 pt. 2 - Obligatory. But I haven't been impressed with the movies historically. The stories are presented in a typical, dramatic way designed for the masses. I would tell them differently. (In theater)
  • It's kind of a Funny Story - Z.Galifianakis is hilarious. Looks entertaining. (Not in theater)
  • Waiting for Forever - I will only watch this with a girl. (Not in theater)
  • The Company Men - Teaches about overcoming pride. And about love inside a family. (Not in theater)
  • Limitless - Potential to illustrate a great metaphor for the pursuit of success. (Not in theater)
  • The Beaver - Example of how a man, like all of us, finds a way to cope with his neuroses.(Not in theater)
  • A Some What Gentle Man - Unique and disparate characters. Funny story. (Not in theater)
  • Pirates 4 - Mermaids?
  • The Adjustment Bureau
Not Worth the Hype:
  • Transformers 3 - Michael Bay can burn in one of his own explosions.
  • Bhutto
  • Unknown - Another Liam Nieson action film.
  • Thor - I know nothing about this film, but I am getting really tired of comic-based films.
  • - Current. Political. Documentary. Middle East. I feel pressure to be interested, but I'm not.
  • Beastly - Although I love B&B, this adolescent, chick-flick is not going to reach anyone over the age of 14. Then again, it could be a timeless metaphor for all. (But that would take some serious stretching of the imagination.)
  • The Next Three Days
  • Hereafter - Not a good year for Matt Damon (in my opinion). I am not wandering. I am not afraid. I am fearless because I know my purpose and my place in eternity.
  • The Fighter - The new Rudy. Oscar-nominee. I don't need inspiration like this.
  • I'm Still Here - Joaquin is trying to say something, but I don't care.

  2. I think I've only ever heard of 3 of those movies. The cowboys vs aliens one looked weird at the HP preview. Not my kind of movie. Speaking of movies, I saw I am Legend last week. I think it's "cast away" and "signs" combined. I just looked at your sidebar pic of the non-lethargic athlete and got a good laugh. :)

Rummi-"CUB" vs. Rummi-"CUBE"

The "Rummikub" Pronunciation Debate Affirmative Constructive: "Cub" For years, I have been a firm advocate and defender of the pronunciation, Rummi-"CUB".  The game box I grew up with spelled it, Rummicub  on the box. However, other productions of the game have variant spellings: Rummykub , Rummy Kube , Rummy Tiles , etc.  Based solely on box spelling, the game's true pronunciation is open to interpretation. Therefore, Rummi"cub" is equally acceptable to any other given pronunciation. Negative  Constructive : "Cube" My opponents argue that since the game originated over seas, we ought to respect and maintain its original pronunciation. Affirmative Rebuttal: Americanization of the Term When the game was brought to America and given Americanized rules, its name was also Americanized. Pronunciation loyalists then counter my rebuttal with, "there are lots of adopted foreign words that have retained their original pron

The Secret Reason Why "Good Witch" Feels Emotionally Off

TL;DR It's the Botox. For the past 3 months, my wife, Stacia, and I have been watching  Good Witch  (via Netflix and Amazon Prime). Stacia adores winding down to "Hallmark-y shows." We can rely on Good Witch episodes to always resolve happily. The episodes are never too intense. The height of conflict revolves around things like someone's inability to locate the perfect spot to snap a romantic photo for a new tourism brochure. I consider my time watching these shows spouse bonding time , and emotional training. My favorite thing about watching feel-good shows with Stacia is getting to observe her facial reactions to the on-screen drama. When two people lean in for a long-anticipated kiss, Stacia tucks her knees into her chest and frowns with her forehead while lifting her chin and bottom lip. While I'm typically unable to suspend my disbelief, Stacia seems completely entranced by the various characters' emotions. Wishing I could join her in being swept aw

Who's Got The Funk?

I am an amateur guitarist, and I've got no funk. My musical skills seem to lacking that special something . Great musicians have it . Those fortunate enough to have gotten hold of  it , create timeless hits. While musicians without it  fade into oblivion. After spending hours searching through Blues history websites and 1970's band documentaries online, I discovered what that special something  is thank to a (70% Man, 30% fish) character from the BBC show "The Mighty Boosh" named Old Gregg. He identified that  thing  as  The Funk ! But what exactly is The Funk ? Here is some dialogue from the show to help explain its origin and purpose: Old Gregg: You're a musician, yeah? Howard: Yes I am. Old Gregg: Butchya ain't very good, are ya? Howard: I'm one of the best in town. Old Gregg: Come on, I read your reviews. Hmm? You know what your problem is? Howard: What? Old Gregg: Ya ain't got the funk. You're all rigid. Hmm? You're l
