Why did I cut my hair?
Everyone keeps asking me. I didn't have a great answer on the spot, so I am using this opportunity to process and think through my motivation. My Motivation
On Wednesday, the 28th of January, I had a head-modeling gig at The Bridge; it was the first of four sessions over the next month. Justin, who teaches on Wednesday nights, smiled and welcomed me on my way in."You know, Bryan" he said pulling me off to the side. "I wouldn't be upset if you were to decide to shave your head for the next study. I mean, you TOTALLY don't have to; I'm just saying--you could do it."
I pondered on his words for the rest of the night.
The following day, I made a list of pros and cons. Some carried more weight than others, but in the end Pros won out.
To Bic, or Not To Bic?
Should I completely bic my head? I'm so close anyway…Cons:
- It's winter and I hate being cold.
- I've always felt that shaved heads are goofy-looking.
- Now more fingers through my wavy hair.
- I just got my hair cut a few days earlier.
- Mom will call me a "Noe-Nazi".
Pros:
- It's for a "good cause".
- I have no outside influences (eg: work, church, gf, etc.)
- I've always secretly wanted to shave it, just to see.
- It would be terribly convenient to maintain.
- I'd spend less time in the shower and less money on hair products.
- I like the novelty of a new hair cut (attention, both positive and possibly negative.)
- A bald head feel neat. Plus I'd get to watch it come back.
- No more "pool hair". I hate that dry, stiff, chlorinated feel/smell.
* "Pool hair" was the convincer for me.
Conclusion
I cut it! But not all the way. I chickened out at a 1/4".And I'm glad I had the sense to stop there. I've loved it at this length! From the very moment I leaned up from bending over my little bathroom sink and looked in the mirror, I felt good about it. I think I'll maintain it at this length for the next few months and maybe on through the Summer.
Although I really like my hair at this length, I'm still curious what a true shave would be like . . .
Great job taking a risk! In my opinion it paid off!!
ReplyDeleteCreeper. I liked the first pic the best. The second pic second most. And the third pic, well... :) But Bryan, I still LOVE you more than you know!
ReplyDeleteUm, I like the first picture best. I'm glad about no pool hair, but your locks are so lovely, I hate to see them shorn off.
ReplyDeleteI just can't think of anything but how you look like a swimmer. I definitely like you better with a little more hair but wouldn't call you a "noe-nazi..." I'm REALLY glad you didn't bic it.
ReplyDeleteI've been considering the 1/4" look for quit sometime. I'm just still not sure about it.
ReplyDeleteI understand and I support your reasoning. However, there's no two ways about it- you look younger (more alive) and more handsome with some length!
ReplyDeleteI like it bic'd. Nice work.
