So I received an invitation to go to Spanish Fork for Thanksgiving Lunch with Uncle Mark. It was terrific! We enjoyed great food and had wonderful bonding time.
Even my pumpkin pie disaster didn't ruin the joy of the family gathering. I told them in my email RSVP that I would try to bake a pie and buy one if it that didn't work out...
I have, in fact, made real pumpkin pie from real pumpkins before. Despite my confidence in pie-making however, I was unable to reproduce success from years past. Let's just say that I melted the pie crust.
In an attempt to sweep my pie-goulash under the rug, I decided to buy a luxury pie from Maceys: Marie Calander's! I put the pie in the freezer for the night and took it out in the morning just before cooking it in the oven. I read the following instructions:

I followed them to the letter. I even gave it two hours to cool. I put it on a cooking sheet for safer transport. I had my first suspicion of disaster when wet pie started splashing out onto the floor mats of my car. The fact that the pie was actually an orange sea of sugar revealed itself when I spilled it all over my pants taking it out of the car.
I couldn't understand it. WHY would the pie be liquid when I followed every instruction perfectly? Everyone assumed that it was the tin foil covering the whole of the pie. I agreed.
When I went back to the instructions however, it implicitly stated to cover the pie with foil...
My Thanksgiving Day cooking confidence has taken a very serious dive. Heaven help me if I'm ever asked to cook the turkey!
I assure you that you'll have cooking success when at my house over Christmas. Sorry about the pie . . . and your pants.
ReplyDeleteDon't lose heart! You just need to read the words in voz alta, that's all! You just covered the pie instead of the cookie sheet, right? I have learned from similar sloshes to always put my pies in a box! I won't take them otherwise...I hope you didn't ruin some nice pants!
ReplyDeleteThat pie pic was cute. What a good idea. I'm SO sorry to hear about your pie disaster. What kind of pie was it? Why was it sloshy? The foil really caused it to be THAT underbaked? Man, next time just go for homemade from scratch, it's really easier than it sounds.
