My #1 Pet Peeve: Substitute Names

This face comes out when strangers call me things like: Bro Bud Buddy Guy Big Guy (My) Friend Cuz Bucko Pal Sport Tiger Skippy Champ Scooter Ace Hoss Boss Kiddo Junior Partner Sparky Cowboy Hefe Amigo Slick Stud I guess it would be acceptable for someone like Clint Eastwood (or the modern day equivalent) to refer to me as  Big Guy . But even then, I'd probably be thinking in the back of my mind, "Huh. Didn't even ask my name. Clint Eastwood is too busy or self-important to make any new meaningful relationships." I'm not too difficult to please; just tack on an iota of creativity, and I'll appreciate the effort.  Make something up that makes fun of my clothes or stature or the current situation we are in. I will cheerfully respond to nicknames like: Your Handsomeness, Toothpick, Comrade Schlotskins, Muerte, Peachfuzz, Wheels, Fatso, Chief, Buzz, The Great Bertón, Lone Pine, Monsignor, Charlemagne, Sexy Pants, Brodisahtvah...

Top 20 Attributes I Find Attractive in Women

People who know me (especially women who want to set me up on dates) have asked me what I look for in a potential spouse. So I thought I'd save future  inquisitrixes  the trouble of asking and just post a list.  (NOTE: This is not a list of qualities I require of my future spouse.   I'm not sure I'd require  anything of a spouse.  But if I did, I'd lean towards this cutsie quote I heard my MTC director, Richard Heaton, who said: choose a woman who, if you die, will get your kids back to heaven.) Top 20 Traits: Shared eternal goals (stipulation: they can't just say, "me too" ) Attractive and well-kept (but not too well —you know, cleans up nicely but feels comfortable rockin' the ponytail) Affectionate (Flirtatious with me) Goal-driven Playfully confident personality Independent (Doesn't exclusively rely on others for amusement) Optimitstic (Looks for the good) Hard worker / Diligent Consumate learner (Never "arrives"...

Who Will Enjoy Disney's Brave?

Image Source: Movieposter.com I had the privilege of previewing Brave weeks before it opened thanks to a very special invitation from a Scottish family who had ties to Utah's Scottish Guild. Needless to say, the crowd I was with was a festive bunch.  (Everyone wore their family-specific kilts.) We gathered outside the Jordan Commons Theater in Sandy, UT an hour before the doors opened in order to properly celebrate all things Scottish: Celtic dancing, bagpipes, kilts, the works!  I had a tremendous cultural experience and loved every minute of it! Enough milieu; on to the film review!  The graphical presentation was, of course, stunning. (Well done, PIXAR.) The music was excellent, but I had hoped for more than two original, lyrical pieces.  (I do hold a special place in my heart for traditional Scottish folk music.) The story was steeped in tradition and authentic mythology and magic. Congratulations, Brenda Chapman, on capturing the essence of a civilizatio...

My 2012 Father's Day Gift

I know how much you love Mt. Olympus, Dad, so a couple of weeks ago I decided to summit it in your honor.  The reason why I wanted to climb it was because I look up there every day from down below and wonder what the view would be like from the top.  I know you climbed it when you lived under its shadow and I just wanted us to have something else in common. It was a difficult hike. We were exposed to the sun for most of the way. It's steep and it's long. And the last ascent essentially requires free-hand rock climbing (not shown because I didn't have hands to spare for the camera.)  The fact that the hike is so difficult creates, I think, a closer bond between those who have actually made it to the top. This is just clip from the summit.  Jason Hills, my best friend in the ward, filmed it for me.  Unfortunately, he was reclined in a camping chair and wasn't able to capture the fullness of the spectacular vistas.
