Marriage Highlights from the April 2011 LDS General Conference

An except from President Monson's April 2011 talk, Priesthood Power : Said President Harold B. Lee, "We are not doing our duty as holders of the priesthood when we go beyond the marriageable age and withhold ourselves from an honorable marriage to these lovely women."  Perhaps you are having a little too much fun being single, taking extravagant vacations, buying expensive cars and toys, and just generally enjoying the carefree life with your friends. I’ve encountered groups of you running around together, and I admit that I’ve wondered why you aren’t out with the young ladies.   Brethren, there is a point at which it’s time to think seriously about marriage and to seek a companion with whom you want to spend eternity. If you choose wisely and if you are committed to the success of your marriage, there is nothing in this life which will bring you greater happiness. My favorite parts of these clips are the gasps and nervous reactions you can hear from the c...

Messing Around at Monday Night Volleyball

Photo of my roommate Scotty and me, waiting for the next game of Monday Night Volleyball. This is a video journal post.  I just wanted to be able to show my kids, when I'm 50, that I could actually jump when I was 30. Indoor volleyball and tennis are my two favorite Winter sports.  I will avoid being out in the cold whenever I don't have to be.

Good Dubstep?

I thought I would never ever like Dubstep.  However, this video of Maceo's dance crew proved me wrong.  I'm beginning to see that, like every art form, there are at least some appropriate examples.  This video legitimized Dubstep for me.  The dance worked really well with the music.  (Best part 2:10.)   Dom obviously doesn't know everything there is to know about Dubstep.  (Warning: Dom is a Guido and uses some PG-13 language.)

21 Home Remedies For Brain Freezes

Too much Haagen Dazs too fast will freeze the brains of lesser men. As for you, press your tongue flat against the roof of your mouth, covering as much as you can. "Since the nerves in the roof of your mouth get extremely cold, your body thinks your brain is freezing, too," says Abo. "In compensating, it overheats, causing an ice-cream headache." The more pressure you apply to the roof of your mouth, the faster your headache will subside. 20 more remedies for brain freezes

How to Deter Your Kids from Asking, "Are We There Yet?!"

Regarding positive and negative reinforcement, VitalSmarts's  Change Anything  research reveals that people fear losing their stuff more than they desire to acquire something that they could have. So here's how to apply the research on road trips: before leaving on a road trip , give each child a $10 roll of quarters. Tell them they spend it on anything he wants when you arrive — but that every time they ask “Are we there yet?” or pester a sibling, you will take a quarter. I wish I’d made this one up, but I didn’t. I read it somewhere. Wonderfully devious. (P.S. You get to spend the quarters on anything you want, too. Or save them for the same tactic on the way home.)
