I Carved Another Pumpkin With Ashlee

Some girls from my ward asked me to join them on a group date to Divine Comedy last Friday. It was a pretty funny show. They did a "F.H.E." rendition of The Beattles' "Let Her Be". They also did a funny skit using life-size shoulder angels. Afterward, we went to Macys (for the 2nd time in 24 hours) to buy a pumpkin. This time I bought a giant one and carved an eyeball into it. We used the guts as little, bloodshot lines around the iris. It was pretty fun. (Note for future parties, don't serve finger foods like popcorn when working with icky pumpkin guts. My favorite pumpkin was a outline of Winny the Poo. This is a shot of all of our pumpkins lined up. The outside ones are Snoopy and his dog, Zero. (My favorite Snoopy character is Linus who carries around the blanket all of the time.) This is my date, Ashlee, trying on the Pumpkin Head from the previous night. (Flash Forward to last night) Ashley call me up again this afternoon, afte...

Time to Buy a Fall/Winter Coat...Again

I've been research for the past three hours and I've come up with a lot of good Jacket choices. Some are super-light. Others are super-puffy. All of them are completely windproof. Basically, they all retail over $250 so they've all got to be pretty darn good. I could really use any advice from you that I can get. I know Mom is big on colors, Belle is keen on prices, Heather usually does a good job balancing the pro and cons, and Stef probably has an opinion on brand names as she has seen a lot of nice outdoor apparel. Y'all get the picture. My biggest concern is that I'll get a medium (which always feels good at the time) but it will turn out to be practically too small. I have the same concern if I get a large, just reversed. Here are the links in order of the ones I like the best. 1. The Arc'Teryx Venta SV Jacket . This is a REAL winner. I tried it on at Out'n'Back today. Unfortunately, I can't find it on sale anywhere. I did find som...

Funny Images from Around the Net (October 24, 2008)

Jesus had better be the name of a Hispanic Hair Stylist! I hate getting pwned in water fights. Do you guys remember when I spended my entire allotment of "board money" to buy our family 4 Super Soakers? My reasoning behind that was two-fold: I wanted to do something kind and selfless for the family (while still reaping some of the benefits myself) and also I wanted to be prepared in case our entire family fell under attack. I took the scout motto, Be Prepared, very seriously. I wonder if people today actually ask their dentist about which brand of cigarette will scar and discolor their teeth least? Someone should ask Uncle Rob. (BTW, this ad is featured in Newsweek this week, Oct. 27.) A Feline NEVER forgets... It also has a shutter-speed setting of 19 hours sometimes. Who here thinks that this would be INCREDIBLY fun and who thinks that it would just be INCREDIBLY mordifying, painful and humiliating to try? Do you guys remember when "Marshma...

Dollar Bill Boxes

What do you do when you are in need of a gift box? Do you go to the store? Do you call a neighbor? Do you convert a box in your food pantry into a gift box? Nay. Make your own box out of dollar bills! The author did a terrible job explaining where to fold. In fact, it was pure luck that I complete the boxes at all. But now I have one gift box and one box to put my vitamin E pill into instead of leaving it out on my bathroom counter. I like the lid-on-top box best. The sliding box catches a little bit when I put them together. That is my art project for the day. (I hope I don't forget how to do make them; that could come in useful someday.) ---------------- Listening to: Snow Patrol - The Lightning Strike

Bryan Pumpkin Head

First of all, I'd like to say, pumpkins are expensive! I went to Macys after the BYU volleyball game on Friday night to find a pumpkin to carve. I found this nice tall, thin one. I thought it fit my personality and physical build, so I bought it. I scooped out the insides while watching The Transporter (an action film). I was so enthralled in the intensity that I scooped right the bottom of the pumpkin right out. That's when I decided to make a hat. The face was easy to make. The scooping took nigh unto 2 hours, while the carving took no more than 15 minutes. I fashioned the mouth so that my eyes fit into the slot. One small problem. I couldn't fit it over my head. In a flash of ingenuity, I cut a line down the back of the pumpkin head so that at its tightest point, I could stretch the back and pop my ears through. The head is actually pretty scary-looking when it the only thing lit up in the apartment. I decided that it was too late to go out and shar...

Farewell Chen (October 4th 2008)

It's been two weeks since Chen left for home. We have kept in touch through Gmail. He sent me a picture of his son, LiuU. What a happy baby! Chen says that he rarely cries. What a lucky father! My favorite memories with Chen will have to be the ones around the ping-pong table. I remember approaching him and asking for my first lesson. He was pleased at my interest and over a series of weeks, helped me break down my bad habits and form new ones. The first few lessons, he just repeated the same three things over and over again: "Move paddle forward", "Keep paddle angle down" and "Don't...do that...again." This is my favorite picture of us. Chen doesn't smile for pictures. You can only snap a picture of him grinning if he's genuinely happy. He and I were simply expressing ourselves in this shot. I was totally amazed that Chen could fit an entire year into two small suitcases and a carry on bag. (I suppose that is what miss...
