12 Days of Social #ASaviorIsBorn

"What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart."

— In the bleak midwinter BY CHRISTINA ROSSETTI

WOW! These videos are incredible! For the past 12 days, these amazing, LDS YouTubers have inspired us with their respective gifts for the King of kings. I invite you, as you watch a few (or all) of these meaning-filled videos, to think about what it is they all have in common. Consider what makes a gift a good one. Then, after coming up with a few ideas, ponder on what you could do to add your gift to theirs. Then do it.

Without further ado, I proudly present 2015's 12 Days of Social #ASaviorIsBorn!

My Christmas Testimony

Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are the greatest gift givers of all time. They're ridiculously over the top in their gift giving. Not only did they provide us with the path for salvation through the Savior's living gospel and Atonement, but they have given us countless more non-essential, but desperately appreciated, gifts as well. As Lindsey Stirling shares at the end of her video, I too am incredibly grateful for the divine creativity and generosity which surround me on a daily basis. E.g., Just think about the gift of music on earth…what an amazing gift! God could have just provided us the basics—food, water, shelter (the modern-day equivalent of socks). But instead, he filled our world with stunning creations, which—when recognized—can fill our lives with peace and a desire to love others.

One of the most sacred divine gifts I have recognized recently is that of fatherly relationships. The story begins with the following premise: God is not some distant watchmaker who wound up the universe and said, see ya'll at the resurrection! He is our loving Father in Heaven, who knows each of us intimately. He desires a relationship with every single one us. And yet, I'm sure I'm not the only one who sometimes treats God like a flawed earthly father, and consequently acts like a distant, misunderstood son.

Speaking of relationships with earthly dads, this week, I have been feeling so grateful to my dad who has recently been knocking at my proverbial door, seeking a closer friendship. We played games as a family over Thanksgiving break. We ate out at a nice restaurant. We served in the temple together. He even sacrificed hours on the phone motivating me to finish my big school project. The visceral experience of my receiving my dad's time and attention over these past few weeks, has helped me see Heavenly Father's love for me more clearly—which makes me cry every time I think about it now. Thanks to my dad, I do not identify as the son a distant Heavenly Father who can't be bothered to spend time with me—He is my daddy. Not just a Father, an Abba. And I am grateful.

What gift can I give Him? Well, I'm handy with technology. Many people don't know how to compile an inspiring set media like this, so I will. Merry Christmas!

Rummi-"CUB" vs. Rummi-"CUBE"

The "Rummikub" Pronunciation Debate Affirmative Constructive: "Cub" For years, I have been a firm advocate and defender of the pronunciation, Rummi-"CUB".  The game box I grew up with spelled it, Rummicub  on the box. However, other productions of the game have variant spellings: Rummykub , Rummy Kube , Rummy Tiles , etc.  Based solely on box spelling, the game's true pronunciation is open to interpretation. Therefore, Rummi"cub" is equally acceptable to any other given pronunciation. Negative  Constructive : "Cube" My opponents argue that since the game originated over seas, we ought to respect and maintain its original pronunciation. Affirmative Rebuttal: Americanization of the Term When the game was brought to America and given Americanized rules, its name was also Americanized. Pronunciation loyalists then counter my rebuttal with, "there are lots of adopted foreign words that have retained their original pron...

The Secret Reason Why "Good Witch" Feels Emotionally Off

TL;DR It's the Botox. For the past 3 months, my wife, Stacia, and I have been watching  Good Witch  (via Netflix and Amazon Prime). Stacia adores winding down to "Hallmark-y shows." We can rely on Good Witch episodes to always resolve happily. The episodes are never too intense. The height of conflict revolves around things like someone's inability to locate the perfect spot to snap a romantic photo for a new tourism brochure. I consider my time watching these shows spouse bonding time , and emotional training. My favorite thing about watching feel-good shows with Stacia is getting to observe her facial reactions to the on-screen drama. When two people lean in for a long-anticipated kiss, Stacia tucks her knees into her chest and frowns with her forehead while lifting her chin and bottom lip. While I'm typically unable to suspend my disbelief, Stacia seems completely entranced by the various characters' emotions. Wishing I could join her in being swept aw...

Who's Got The Funk?

I am an amateur guitarist, and I've got no funk. My musical skills seem to lacking that special something . Great musicians have it . Those fortunate enough to have gotten hold of  it , create timeless hits. While musicians without it  fade into oblivion. After spending hours searching through Blues history websites and 1970's band documentaries online, I discovered what that special something  is thank to a (70% Man, 30% fish) character from the BBC show "The Mighty Boosh" named Old Gregg. He identified that  thing  as  The Funk ! But what exactly is The Funk ? Here is some dialogue from the show to help explain its origin and purpose: Old Gregg: You're a musician, yeah? Howard: Yes I am. Old Gregg: Butchya ain't very good, are ya? Howard: I'm one of the best in town. Old Gregg: Come on, I read your reviews. Hmm? You know what your problem is? Howard: What? Old Gregg: Ya ain't got the funk. You're all rigid. Hmm? You're l...
