Synopsis
The six-person crew of a derelict spaceship awakens from stasis in the farthest reaches of space. Their memories wiped clean, they have no recollection of who they are or how they got on board. The only clue to their identities is a cargo bay full of weaponry and a destination: a remote mining colony that is about to become a war zone. With no idea whose side they are on, they face a deadly decision. Will these amnesiacs turn their backs on history, or will their pasts catch up with them? (IMDB)Backstory
Produced in Canada, DARK MATTER was syndicated by the U.S. Syfy channel, June 15th, 2015, and was made available on Netflix just 2 days ago. September 28. The show has quickly accrued more than a cult following. Wikipedia reports 1.28 million views of the pilot, just in the U.S. Its popularity is no surprise since the script was written by the same folks who did Stargate.Personal Review
While lacking the blockbuster budget, effects, and drama of Battlestar Galactica, DARK MATTER possesses a charm of its own. (More like Farscape than Firefly. But still something Browncoats can get behind.) The show has enormous potential. The concept is intriguing. The message of redemption is endearing. But so far, the execution feels bland. It's just fun enough to keep me watching. But the thing that makes it #BINGWORTHY is the cliff hanger at the end. I spent 2 hours searching all the forums to hear what everyone had to say. I won't spoil it for you here. The viewer follows our main characters along on their respective journeys of self discovery. Each character is fiercely independent, and yet their amnesiac bond proves stronger than blood as they battle together to regain their memories and purpose. The thing that makes this space opera so intense (but fun-loving) is the chemistry between all of the strong personalities on board; that and the fact that one of them is a traitor…
Expect cursing such as four-letter words ("hell," "s--t"), as well as some flirting and passing references to sex.
Bottomline: If you're into dark sci-fi like me, you will enjoy DARK MATTER; others may find it a bit of a yawn. E.g., If the idea of Wil Weaton (aka Wesley Crusher in the first four seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation) guest staring late in the season intrigues you, this show was made for you.
