Apparently, Disney is going to flesh out the Star Wars universe by producing spinoffs films in addition to the canon (Episode VII). Spinoffs were inevitable in my mind, but I had no idea they'd be coming so soon. This "STAR WARS: LEGENDS" trailer was finally released this week. The film was originally planned to be finished in 2007 for the Star Wars 30th Anniversary...
POSSIBLE DIRECTOR FOR "LEGENDS":
"After his monster Godzilla opening, director Gareth Edwards has landed the director’s chair for an Untitled Star Wars 3D stand-alone film, which Disney has dated for a December 16, 2016 release. Alvin & The Chipmunks 4 from 20th Century Fox is the only competition so far on that date. How ironic, as it was Fox who distributed the initial Star Wars in 1977?" Deadline Hollywood
MY COMMENTARY:
I concede that am I probably making a false connection here. (I don't live in this space. But it's fun for amateurs like me to speculate too.) The trailer above offers a nostalgic look at some of our favorite characters, while allowing us to glimpse some of our new favorites from the books. I honestly doubt LEGENDS will be any better than Episode I in terms of story, but when you have this or The Chipmunks as end-of-the-year film options, it's a no brainer.
Regarding the director pick, I feel like Edwards is a fast rising star—not for his creativity, but because JJ (the ONLY hot director right now, next to Nolan) is tied up doing 10+ other film projects (including Ep. VII) and Hollywood is desperate for an understudy. Edwards would be a gamble for Disney. The only other film he directed before he did Godzilla ($160M budget) was the animated film, Monsters ($500K). And that was is a huge leap for Edwards in and of itself. It feels like Edwards is being groomed by both Disney and Warner Brothers. The WB wants Edwards to get some more time on set before he returns to the Godzilla sequels. Disney has given him a non-high stakes film to see if they want to invited him to join JJ in more important productions.
