I'm not super impressed with any of the new shows this fall. I may not end up watching more than the pilot episodes of each, but I will limit myself to watching the full season of one TV show per genre. Here are my results:
- Ben and Kate (maybe)
- Vegas (tremendous potential)
- Maybe others (depending on school)
Comedy—Ben And Kate (FOX, Tuesday 8:30-9pm)
Kate (Dakota Johnson, ‘The Social Network’) is a single mother with two children in her life: her daughter, and her older brother Ben (Nat Faxon, ‘Zookeeper’). When Ben gets a call from his ex-girlfriend he immediately goes to his sister for advise. When he discovers his ex is getting married he thinks of an elaborate plan to stop the wedding. When he finds out the man his sister has been dating is seeing someone else as well, he sacrifices his plan however, so he can prevent his sister from making a huge mistake. After this, he decides to stay with Kate and help her raise her daughter. Tune in to FOX to see the premiere of ‘Ben and Kate’ on September 25th at 8:30/7:30c.
The trailer of ‘Ben and Kate’ made me laugh out loud. I’ve always liked TV series and movies revolving around the ‘grown up sibling, not so grown up sibling’-concept. Also, the Ben-character is funny in how normal he is. Let’s face it; writing something down on the inside of your hand is never a good idea. However, people in TV series always seem to pull it off. Not Ben. His sweaty palms keep it real! It’s these ordinary things that made me laugh. If this series continues down the path it has taken in the preview, I'm feeling pretty good about the odds on this one. I think I'll invest. If this show doesn't meet expectations, I'd be willing to give The Mindy Project (FOX Tuesday 9:30-10pm).
Drama—Vegas (CBS, Tuesdays @ 10-11pm)
‘Vegas’ is a new drama series on CBS set in the 1960s. The show will premiere Tuesday, September 25th and air every Tuesday at 10/9c. The series is based on the true story of Ralph Lamb (Dennis Quaid, ‘The Special Relationship’) a rodeo cowboy who became a Sheriff of Las Vegas. Soon after his appointment Lamb clashes with ruthless Chicago gangster Vincent Savino (Michael Chiklis, ‘No Ordinary Family’). Co-starring are Jason O’Mara (‘Terra Nova’) as Lamb’s brother Jack and Taylor Handley (‘Skateland’) as Lamb’s son Dixon.
This show looks like it has a lot of potential. Not only it is directed by James Mangold, who has several Oscar nominations and two wins, but it also features great actors. One of my favorite actors, not mentioned in the trailer is Carrie-Anne Moss from The Matrix series. This show is unique because it’s based on a true story. Lamb became Vegas's unwillingly Sheriff, and in the trailer it is shown that Lamb has some unorthodox way of enforcing the law. I'm not sold on the story, but I'll basically watch anything this combination of actors can put together. I expect this show to do good in the ratings.
In case I need to swap out mid-season, the runner up is Elementary (Thursdays on CBS, 10-11pm). I'm not super excited about even starting it, because supporting it seems like I'd be cheating on the BBC's Sherlock. However, I realize my bias and I should be willing to appreciate it on its own merits—but it's hard… I saw the Elementary pilot and it reminded me of Psych without the comedy. If that doesn't hold my attention, I might convert mid-season to Last Resort (ABC, Thursdays 8-9pm)
Fantasy/SyFy
Nothing. I haven't seen anything worth my time yet. Definitely not interested in Revolution, 666 Park Avenue, or Beauty and the Beast.
Tried and True shows I'll continue to watch
- The Mentalist
- Fringe (Fridays, 9-10pm on FOX)
- Suits
Losing Interest
- Community
- Modern Family (Wednesdays, 9-9:30pm on ABC)
- Castle (Mondays, 10-11pm on ABC)
