What I Did With My 2008 Christmas Money

I received money for Christmas this year! $$$, in my opinion, is a super-duper gift. It is not necessarily the most thoughtful gift, but it is the most efficient and reasonable.

This year, I decided to purchase myself new shoes, an uber-cozy winter coat and a new external Hard drive. Detailed descriptions will follow.

1. Shoes

My main drive for going into the shoe store in Columbus was to buy a pair of slippers that would keep my feet warm inside the apartment. I was willing to pay up to $30. I ended up leaving the store with a high-quality pair of Minnetonka slippers and an $80 pair of Capital Rockports, all for under $33! Got to love buy-one-get-one-free on the clearance rack!

2. External Hard Drive

Phil was kind enough to buy my 320 GB (Gigabyte) Seagate hard drive for Belle's Birthday. With money he gave me, I added it to my own to buy a 1 TB (Terabyte) Seagate hard drive. It came today via UPS but I missed the deliver, Darn it! I'll get it tomorrow for sure. Here is a picture of the hard drive:

3. Winter Coat

I will seriously never be cold again! I went to my friend and store owner, Keith, at Out'n'Back where I found that he still had a coat that had been on the shelf for over 3 months. I knew I had a bargaining chip there. I put my doe eyes on and told Keith how sad I was about missing the 40% all coat sale that he ran over the Christmas holiday. "I'll take care of you," he smiled slyly, ushering my over to the sales counter. On a $275 coat, I only paid $160 + tax! Here is a link to the Mountain Hardwear Website to read all about the features. (Note that the actual color is quite darker when there isn't a camera flash glaring off of its high-tech, waterproof, breathable Conduit SL lining.

In Celebration, I made myself a humongous stake and mashed potatoes. (I spent a long time preparing and grilling the stake only to find out during the first bite that it is not worth grilling a $3 piece of meat.)

Just imagine chomping into 2" thick stake lined with sand. Yucky! [Add facial distortion]

  1. Was it just a cheap steak? Shouldda marinated it for 3 days in some soy and ginger! It looked so beautiful and Swedish with the yellow corn on the blue plate! I'll bet the potatos were great anyway! :)

  2. Your shoes are gorgeous and comfy looking; of course, your coat is the bomb and your hard drive will be a wonderful asset! The best part is, you can stop looking now!

  3. Hey, now we can call you Puff Daddy! Sorry about the steak. But anything would pale in comparison to the way we were eating out here during Christmas.

  4. Those shoes WERE a SUPER DUPER deal! I'm so glad you got both, I think you're going to be very happy with them. How did I know mom was gonna LOVE your new chaqueta. ;) I'm glad you will never be cold again Bryan. Phil still LOVES his new jacket and wears it pretty much non-stop. (We're trying to keep our heat bill down this month at our house if that gives you any idea....)

  5. Bry thanks for the message and for sharing your Christmas purchase decisions! I am glad you will never again be cold. Maybe you will be lucky enough to eat at a Mortons or Ruths Chris steak house some day. Remember Daniels Broiler for your 16th birthday where we learned all about the different cuts of meat?

Enjoy the shoes and love the 1TB - let me know how long till it is full.

Rummi-"CUB" vs. Rummi-"CUBE"

The "Rummikub" Pronunciation Debate Affirmative Constructive: "Cub" For years, I have been a firm advocate and defender of the pronunciation, Rummi-"CUB".  The game box I grew up with spelled it, Rummicub  on the box. However, other productions of the game have variant spellings: Rummykub , Rummy Kube , Rummy Tiles , etc.  Based solely on box spelling, the game's true pronunciation is open to interpretation. Therefore, Rummi"cub" is equally acceptable to any other given pronunciation. Negative  Constructive : "Cube" My opponents argue that since the game originated over seas, we ought to respect and maintain its original pronunciation. Affirmative Rebuttal: Americanization of the Term When the game was brought to America and given Americanized rules, its name was also Americanized. Pronunciation loyalists then counter my rebuttal with, "there are lots of adopted foreign words that have retained their original pron...

The Secret Reason Why "Good Witch" Feels Emotionally Off

TL;DR It's the Botox. For the past 3 months, my wife, Stacia, and I have been watching  Good Witch  (via Netflix and Amazon Prime). Stacia adores winding down to "Hallmark-y shows." We can rely on Good Witch episodes to always resolve happily. The episodes are never too intense. The height of conflict revolves around things like someone's inability to locate the perfect spot to snap a romantic photo for a new tourism brochure. I consider my time watching these shows spouse bonding time , and emotional training. My favorite thing about watching feel-good shows with Stacia is getting to observe her facial reactions to the on-screen drama. When two people lean in for a long-anticipated kiss, Stacia tucks her knees into her chest and frowns with her forehead while lifting her chin and bottom lip. While I'm typically unable to suspend my disbelief, Stacia seems completely entranced by the various characters' emotions. Wishing I could join her in being swept aw...

Who's Got The Funk?

I am an amateur guitarist, and I've got no funk. My musical skills seem to lacking that special something . Great musicians have it . Those fortunate enough to have gotten hold of  it , create timeless hits. While musicians without it  fade into oblivion. After spending hours searching through Blues history websites and 1970's band documentaries online, I discovered what that special something  is thank to a (70% Man, 30% fish) character from the BBC show "The Mighty Boosh" named Old Gregg. He identified that  thing  as  The Funk ! But what exactly is The Funk ? Here is some dialogue from the show to help explain its origin and purpose: Old Gregg: You're a musician, yeah? Howard: Yes I am. Old Gregg: Butchya ain't very good, are ya? Howard: I'm one of the best in town. Old Gregg: Come on, I read your reviews. Hmm? You know what your problem is? Howard: What? Old Gregg: Ya ain't got the funk. You're all rigid. Hmm? You're l...
