With the start of the Olympics this past week, everyone around these parts is all "fired up", as Michael Phelps would say. As I watch nearly everyday, I catch myself saying, "I could do that" after almost every Olympic event; volleyball, tennis, gymnastics, and diving--easy breezy.
In addition to watching the Olympics, I spend about an hour everyday out by the pool reading Les Mis. My ritual involves laying my towel down on the edge and read a chapter with my legs dangling in. I rotate a quarter-turn, counterclockwise every chapter. After four rotations, I jump in and swim around. If I still feel like reading, I do another round.
While I've carried out this ritual the last few weeks, I've made quite a few friends who also frequent the pool everyday at about noon. One day, an impetuous girl named Shannon decided that she wanted to make a really big splash, so she coaxed everyone out of their lawn chairs and to the side of the pool. After we all jumped in a few times, we decided to think up new events. It soon turned into a legitimate competition.
There were 5 official Olympic Events:
1. Team Wave Making (whoever displaced the most amount of water out of the pool wins)
2. Diving (no flips; I won with a back dive and a full twist)
3. Three Team/Two Player Relay Races
-one arm for girls
-no arms for boys
4. Underwater somersaults (7 was the record)
5. Distance Swim on one breath of air (3 lengths of 22m was the record)

We had a great time. We only did it once. I met a handful of new people that I had only seen before. It was a ton of fun. Since then, we've all gone back to our book reading. But we all know that we are champions.

So, BTW, how much of the Olympics have you been able to enjoy? I admit I thought of you many times as I watched the volleyball, cycling, diving and gymnastics-you really can do it all. And so well.
ReplyDeleteFunny one on the fecal matter sign! And where did they come up with that last one?! I truly do feel you must ultimately use your knowledge and facility with the computer in your career-it's where you truly shine!
You guys must have had a lot of fun with your mini Olympics. You didn't have to prove it to me, I always knew you were a champion.
ReplyDeleteToo true, I've thought of you many times during the Olympics. You never cease to amaze me. Great pictures. Love Les Mis.
ReplyDeleteI thought I already commented on this. Weird. Looks like fun! I'm glad you guys are getting into the spirit.
ReplyDeleteI actually love the last picture the best. I'm sure that's what it looks like in the minds of some of the Olympic athletes.
