$(As time goes by...$10,000 becomes:
$
There were five or six of us--members of some group, not close friends, but still all connected somehow. Under the camouflage of night, we scattered into the dark, empty street with $100 million EACH, or at least as many bundles of $10,000 bill as we could carry.
One girl ducked into a street-level motel across the street and stuffed her the loot into a previously prepared hole in the wall. I looked across the street in the other direction and say two other companions step into a cab.
I looked down into my two open duffel bags overflowing with cash. Almost without hesitation, I tipped open a giant city dumpster in front of me and began pouring the money into it. My actions drew the attention of everyone else in the group that was still around.
Within moments, I was restrained by four, strong arms and wrestled to the rough asphalt. Three faces stared down at mine from above me. "If you don't want your money, just buy an obscure mansion somewhere and think about what you'll do with the rest." "Why don't we all buy islands around the world and then we can spend the rest of our lives just traveling back and forth between our one another's houses."
The next thing I knew, I was in my Victorian-style estate hidden away on a private island somewhere in the Caribbean. My questionable companions were arriving in their personal jets. Ribs and mashed potatoes were being prepared in the kitchen. Before I let anyone in, I tested their biblical knowledge at the security gate through the intercom.
Shortly, there were a number of bodies piled up at the gate, all collaborating on what the answers might be to the three questions:
1. Which NT prophet restored the priesthood of Aaron to Joseph Smith in these last days?
2. What is the name of God's current prophet who divinely leads His church via revelation?
3. What was the name of the OT city that crumbled after the children of Israel marched around it seven times everyday for seven days?
Sadly, one of the companions was forced to send his pilot back to the nearest Island with internet access to research the answers. (I had my island's satellite internet access password-protected and encrypted for this very reason.)
We all spent the next three days sitting around, eating, playing golf and video games and perusing every other form of entertainment my island had to offer. (Each island was unique in what forms of entertainment it had to offer. Mine was two, 18-hole golf courses--I love nature. Others' featured race car tracks, high-adventure sports, a virtual reality environment, obstacle courses and weapon ranges, etc.)
For 1 years and 3 months we shared each others' company. In that time I learned the following things:
1. If you have money, you naturally become friends with other people with money, regardless of how little you may care for their personalities.
2. Time marches on, in spite of your wealth.
3. Happiness does not follow those who solely seek selfish pursuits. My favorite moments were trying to make my new friends comfortable while hosting.
4. The riches foods, when shared with poor company, taste worse than the most basic foods, when shared with true friends.
5. I was dissatisfied with my life of luxury because I was not pursuing what I truly wanted to do--It felt more and more like a prison.
