After a long Saturday morning EMT class, I came home with the weekend assignment to perform at least 15 imaginary assessments that take about 10 minutes a piece. After nice lunch at a new Mexican restaurant with my roommate, Nolan, and a little book review I ventured out to the Carriage Cove Pool with pressure cuff and stethoscope in hand.
I wish I had taken a picture of the hoard of sunbathers surrounding the pool that Saturday afternoon. Just imagine the pool scene from Sandlot. There were probably close to 50 people--only 25% of which were CC residents. All I saw was a perfect environment for taking peoples' vitals.
I systematically moved from one recliner-pool-chair to the next for three hours straight! Many of the girls surprised me by how willing and even anxious they were to have someone examine them. Many gave reasons/excuses for helping me. Some said that they had been wondering about their blood pressure. Others more straight forward and admitted that they just like being touched. The dudes, on the other hand, were much more laid back; many just laid back with their eyes closed for 10 minutes.
At one point I was so hot that I tested myself for dehydration. Sure enough I wasn't responding well the Capillary Refill Test so I went in for an hour to drink and cool off. As soon as I felt better though, I was right back out there until some girls I was working on invited me out to dinner and a movie. I didn't leave until I met "Fooey Vakapuna", BYU's star running back, along with 30 other Samoans down on the volleyball court. I assessed his cousin, Kina, who pretended to be kicked in the head by "Fooey" because he as jealous of her afro. Let's just say that after 10 minutes with the Samoans, I was part of their family they were offering me pizza and soda and insisting that I play some volleyball with them.
What an afternoon! I truly met more people in those 4+ hours out at the pool than in the entire three weeks that I've lived here at the Cove.

Wow Bry--way to work it! I'm surprised by some of the girls...they just like being touched? Did you get some good results? Did you get faster at taking the readings?
ReplyDeleteSounds awesome, homework plus socializing plus free food plus Samoan volleyball. I wanna join up!
