It's been a SPORTS weekend!

Monday at the gym, I was invite to attend a BYU for a mid-semester ballroom dance social on Wednesday night by a girl I knew back when. She said that a few of my friends were performing. Initially, I wanted to just go see them and skip out on the dance part. (I didn't know how awkward it would be for a graduate to go to a function with beginning students.) However, I decided, "What the heck?" and put on a tie and went.

It was a lot of fun. I'd forgotten how fun it was to run into all the different couples out there on the floor. This social was different for me than any other I'd been to--I was much more relaxed. Despite not remembering most of the syllabus dance moves, I still had a great time because I didn't care about the "moves".

I also enjoyed running into old partners and friends from team. Kristi from Estonia, an old, latin dance partner, who is on the intermediate dance team now, invited me to be her "Open Routine" partner when I could find time. I told her that I would love to dance with her if I'm still available and around come Spring.

Thursday, I went to the gym to swim but forgot my shorts. So instead, I worked out (WITH WEIGHTS) for the first time in 2-years, I think. After which, I came back downstairs and saw that there was a volleyball game going on in the basketball gym. The players were mostly skilled, Hispanic shorties and monstrous Polynesians. I jummped right in and played very competitively. My team won every game we played; I never had to rotate out for 2 hours!

Friday, I really wanted to go swimming, so I did. I was surprised to see the effects of just one 30 minute work from the day before. I felt so much more powerful in the water. I swam a mile (1600 M) and didn't even feel it. Later that night, I went to the BYU v. Stanford Men's Volleyball game. It was intense! The game was won in overtime, 21-19 BYU.

Saturday, our ward threw a dance party at the church building we attend. It was surprisingly fun. Most ward dance parties are lame, but here in Provo, almost 3/4 of the ward showed up. It was comparable to a Redmond Stake Dance. All of my roommates attended, for example. I busted my Napoleon Dynamite moves and some swing stuff too. I felt bad as I looked around to see a lot of people who wanted to be able to dance, but couldn't--that was pretty much everybody actually. That didn't keep them from bopping around though. At one point everyone was dancing, thanks to the choo-choo-train that I started.

After about an hour at the dance, I snuck out to see if I could catch the last part of the BYU/Stanford follow-up game. I entered with enough time to see BYU lose the last 4 points to Stanford. (I had never seen BYU M Volleyball lose before. Did you know that we still play the fight song, even after we lose?

With a desire to spectators still in my blood, I moved over to the BYU indoor practice facility (Soccer fields) where there was an intercollegiate women's soccer tournament going on. I watched Dixie v. Webber, and part of Dixie v. Utah Valley (UVSC, now UVU). I usually don't watch soccer that long but I ran into an old freshman friend who I stood next to and taught me a little more about the game. WHAT COMES NEXT IS A LITTLE GRAPHIC (PG-13), I saw an entire team of soccer players change clothes right before my eyes! I guess, in the soccer circles, a sports bra isn't really considered underwear. I think having seen that motivated me to stay longer to find out what other rarities I might see...

All in all, it was a fun-tastic week!

  1. You must be one tired puppy after all that activity! I'm so jealous about your pick up volleyball game. I would LOVE to do that.

Wish I could've been at the dance too, to see your EFY counselor self start out the non-dancers in the choo-choo train. What a guy. Love you!

  2. Me too Bryan! I would have been in heaven in some competitive vball games like that and not wanted it to ever end! What a week! Who else plays and spectates so many sports in just 6 days?! What really impresses me is how much easier the aqua-mile was after lifting weights for 30 minutes! Have a great week-good luck with the taxes and job hunting! Maybe you could call on your EFY friend for some help in that direction for a year or so...

  3. Thanks for the newsy post Bryan. I was exhausted just reading all that. Mom and I got a 40 min walk in on Sat AM and I ran 1 lap at the HS track for old times sake. I am glad you are so busy and look forward to seeing how you keep up your exercise routine throughout your life. I somehow expect you will. Have a great week. Talk to you on Wed night.

Rummi-"CUB" vs. Rummi-"CUBE"

The "Rummikub" Pronunciation Debate Affirmative Constructive: "Cub" For years, I have been a firm advocate and defender of the pronunciation, Rummi-"CUB".  The game box I grew up with spelled it, Rummicub  on the box. However, other productions of the game have variant spellings: Rummykub , Rummy Kube , Rummy Tiles , etc.  Based solely on box spelling, the game's true pronunciation is open to interpretation. Therefore, Rummi"cub" is equally acceptable to any other given pronunciation. Negative  Constructive : "Cube" My opponents argue that since the game originated over seas, we ought to respect and maintain its original pronunciation. Affirmative Rebuttal: Americanization of the Term When the game was brought to America and given Americanized rules, its name was also Americanized. Pronunciation loyalists then counter my rebuttal with, "there are lots of adopted foreign words that have retained their original pron...

The Secret Reason Why "Good Witch" Feels Emotionally Off

TL;DR It's the Botox. For the past 3 months, my wife, Stacia, and I have been watching  Good Witch  (via Netflix and Amazon Prime). Stacia adores winding down to "Hallmark-y shows." We can rely on Good Witch episodes to always resolve happily. The episodes are never too intense. The height of conflict revolves around things like someone's inability to locate the perfect spot to snap a romantic photo for a new tourism brochure. I consider my time watching these shows spouse bonding time , and emotional training. My favorite thing about watching feel-good shows with Stacia is getting to observe her facial reactions to the on-screen drama. When two people lean in for a long-anticipated kiss, Stacia tucks her knees into her chest and frowns with her forehead while lifting her chin and bottom lip. While I'm typically unable to suspend my disbelief, Stacia seems completely entranced by the various characters' emotions. Wishing I could join her in being swept aw...

Who's Got The Funk?

I am an amateur guitarist, and I've got no funk. My musical skills seem to lacking that special something . Great musicians have it . Those fortunate enough to have gotten hold of  it , create timeless hits. While musicians without it  fade into oblivion. After spending hours searching through Blues history websites and 1970's band documentaries online, I discovered what that special something  is thank to a (70% Man, 30% fish) character from the BBC show "The Mighty Boosh" named Old Gregg. He identified that  thing  as  The Funk ! But what exactly is The Funk ? Here is some dialogue from the show to help explain its origin and purpose: Old Gregg: You're a musician, yeah? Howard: Yes I am. Old Gregg: Butchya ain't very good, are ya? Howard: I'm one of the best in town. Old Gregg: Come on, I read your reviews. Hmm? You know what your problem is? Howard: What? Old Gregg: Ya ain't got the funk. You're all rigid. Hmm? You're l...
