Break Up 101: How to End a Relationship With Class

Disclaimer: I wrote this as if I were speaking to myself. If you can transfer anything from it, I'm glad. Should I Break Up? Break-ups should never be taken lightly. It's rare to find someone you genuinely care for, and who cares for you too. It's natural to not want to give up on something that is good in so many ways. Up to this point, you may have only experienced a "gut feeling" that you need to break up. This feeling to move on may be the result of a conscious or subconscious recognition that your relationship and your respective dreams are no longer compatible. What do I mean by this? Dreams are a part of the story you tell yourself that describes what life should be like; they are the engine of your core self — your expectations, your perceptions, your assumptions, your thoughts and feelings about life (including thoughts and feelings about those around you). Before breaking up, it's important to assess whether or not your reality still aligns wit...

How to Become a Volleyball Expert

The Secret to Success is a Proactive Defense When you're playing defense, many players think that how they handle the hard drives and how they pass are the most important things. Yes, those are critical skills, but more important is to  make sure you are in the right place at the right time.  A  lot of players are so concerned with their form, they end up just standing there with "stone feet" and not moving anywhere.   You don't need to worry about passing the ball if you are not getting there in the first place! Follow these tips to make sure you are playing defense at the highest level possible.  1. Get in proper defensive stance -  You will find it hard to move to the right place if you are standing incorrectly. You should have your knees bent, on your toes, keeping your arms relaxed and in front of you. There is nothing that drives a coach more crazy than to see a player playing defense standing straight up with their knees locked. The bottom lin...

My Favorite Riddle of 2013

I do not breath, yet I run. I do not eat, yet I sleep. I do not drink, yet I swim. I do not think, yet I grow. I cannot see you, but you see me every day. What am I? Think you know what it is? Cryptic Hint Easy Hint This is a photo of me relaxing on the side of Cascade mountain after scrambling up a draw filled with snow and ice. All I had to support my ascent was a pair of boots, walking poles, my muscular legs, and my incredible sense of balance; I only fell twice! You can't really see them from this angle, but try to look for all the scrapes I acquired! Answer Your Leg

Photography 101: Value

I had the privilege of taking my first digital photography lesson this week from Melanie Parry, a BYU/UVU Senior graduating in photography.  She lent me her backup camera and gave me an assignment to capture photographs that isolate a subject, with an emphasis on light and dark values.  Here is a selection of my photos: I took these photos on a nature walk behind my house on Friday.  I discovered that I was enamored with the Sun as a subject—hopefully that fascination will fade in time.  While I have a natural eye for a few things, I've got a TON still to learn!  I especially need practice developing my storytelling ability.  Right now, my images lack interest because they all can be understood at first glance.  I can't wait to start shooting people; that will be much more interesting!
