3 Mysteries of the Week (August 15, 2009)

1. Question: It is one of the simplest, but most enigmatic mysteries of nature: why do flamingos like to stand on one leg? Answer: Flamingos stand on one leg to regulate their body temperature. 2. Question: What is the origin of "See no evil, Hear no evil, Speak no evil?" Answer: The main guess is that it is derived from a religious phrase, "If we do not hear, see, or speak evil, we ourselves shall be spared all evil." This religious phrase was put into practice in the form of three monkeys carved, one with its hands over its eyes, one with its hands over its ears, and another with its hands over its mouth, for the Nikko Toshogo Shrine in Japan. 3. Question: What is my favorite palindrome ? *Sambo: A negro; sometimes, the offspring of a black person and a mulatto [offspring of black and white]; - formerly used colloquially or with humorous intent, but now considered offensive or racist by African-Americans. Taught to me as a commonplace term in my Univ...

Stef's Commencement and Graduation!

Happy Graduation Stef! Stef asked me to be her photographer, and we had "a fun time." But I'm afraid I didn't perform to the expected competency level. Here's an example of a video clip inside the BYU Marriot Center just before Elder Ballard's Commencement speech: The day was fun and family-filled. We spent the morning packing. Took graduation pictures and enjoyed a leisurely lunch with the family. Toured the Museum of Art and even went out to CPK for dinner. Here's a pic of my grandpa photoboming my sister:

My New Car Name Contest Results

The poll ended in a 5 way tie 1st place - Halle, Moby, Roz, Gandalf, Bianca with a score of 3. 2nd place - Harmon with a score of 0. Not very definitive. The funny thing is that a couple of days ago, I decided on another name proposed at the 11th hour by my mom via email: The name by which he will be known, is: ¡Pepe!

Where Should I Buy a Used Car in Provo?

I'm afraid I don't have your email, Doug, so I'll have to respond to your question in the form of a blog post: Doug, Congratulations on deciding on buying a used car. If I were to do it again, I might buy something for between $3,000-$7,000. There were a lot of good [but risky] ones on the various lots I looked at. I would definitely buy from a private seller before going to a dealer. The difference with a dealer is, the cost is usually 25% more, but it comes with a warranty. KSL.com is the best! When I sold my car, I got eight bites through KSL to every one I got from craigslist. Always ask lower than what is posted. Then they'll quote you another price and then you meet them in the middle. That's just what is done. I almost gave my car away to the first person who contacted me for only $900 just because that's what he asked for! If you are looking for a nicer used car, like mine, I can recommend: Bless Auto Sales - Dithel, from South Am...

Peeling Prawns with One Hand

I was surprised this morning by a knock at my door. It was two of my Sri Lankan neighbors delivering a plate of authentic cuisine that their mom made for them the previous night. They told me they wanted to see my face when I ate it, so I microwaved it, got myself a cup of juice, and headed over to their place. I was again surprised to find an entire Sri Lankan family sitting down to breakfast. The table was spread with an array of dishes, both spicy and cool. I sat down, feeling sheepish for having assumed that I needed to bring my fork along. Everyone ate with their right hand in the plate and their left hand in their lap. I had a special challenge before me because I was the only one with prawns. It took me a second to remember that you have to peel the shell off the prawn before eating it. Instinctively, I inserted my left hand to get better leverage on the prawn, soiling both my hands. Soon, my mouth was burning, but I couldn't reach for my plastic cup because bo...
